What to Expect From Your First Mediation Session
Starting mediation can feel daunting, especially if you are going through a difficult separation. Knowing what to expect can help ease anxiety and ensure you get the most from the process.
Before Your First Session
Before joint sessions begin, each party will attend a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting). This is a confidential, one-to-one meeting with the mediator where you can discuss your situation privately and find out whether mediation is suitable for you.
What Happens in the Session
Your mediator will begin by welcoming both parties, explaining the ground rules, and confirming confidentiality. Each person will have the opportunity to speak without interruption. The mediator will help identify the key issues that need to be resolved and begin exploring options.
You Do Not Have to Agree on Everything Immediately
Mediation is a process, not a single event. You may leave the first session without a complete agreement, and that is completely normal. Progress is made step by step.
What About Online Mediation?
At Our Mediation, all sessions are conducted online via secure video call. Research shows that online mediation is just as effective as in-person mediation, and many clients find it more convenient and less intimidating.
