Frequently Asked Questions

What is family mediation?

Family mediation is a voluntary process where a neutral third party helps people resolve disputes and reach agreements. Rather than going to court, mediation allows both parties to discuss issues calmly and work towards practical solutions that suit everyone involved.

What is a MIAM?

A MIAM (Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting) is the first step in the mediation process. It is a private meeting where we:
• Explain how mediation works
• Assess whether it is suitable for your situation
• Answer any questions you may have
In many cases, attending a MIAM is required before applying to court.

What is joint mediation?

Joint mediation is where both people attend the mediation session together at the same time.
• Both parties are present (online)
• Discussions are guided by the mediator
• Each person has the opportunity to speak and be heard
This works well when both people feel comfortable communicating directly.

What is shuttle mediation?

Shuttle mediation is where each person is in a separate space, and the mediator moves between them.
• You are placed in separate online rooms
• The mediator speaks to each person individually
• Communication is managed through the mediator
This is helpful where there is high conflict or where direct communication is difficult.

Which option is better?

There is no one-size-fits-all approach.
• Joint mediation is often quicker and more collaborative
• Shuttle mediation provides more space and can feel more comfortable in sensitive situations
At Our Mediation, we will help you decide what works best.

Can we switch between joint and shuttle mediation?

Yes. You can move between joint and shuttle mediation depending on how the process develops and what feels most appropriate.
